Winter Mountaineering

In winter, the line between hill walking and climbing is much less clear, with a simple route to a munro summit often crossing some steeper snow slopes or exposed rocky ridges which require a greater range of skills and experience.
Our winter mountaineering courses are designed to bridge this gap, giving you the confidence to progress onto more adventurous terrain and climb up to grade one gullies.

Skills covered would include:
Safe and efficient footwork on steeper snow slopes in ascent and decent.
Use of an ice axe to safeguard you on a slope and stop a slip or slide.
When to use a rope.
Building snow belays in ascent and for abseiling.
Selecting and using simple rock belays.
As with all our winter courses we will also cover some navigation coaching and avalanche awareness. Our ratio of staff to students will not exceed 1:4 on these courses.
