THE SOURCE OF OUR STRENGTH IS OUR PEOPLE
CORE TEAM
Mark - Senior Instructor
Growing up in North Wales, the mountains, lakes and rivers, represented the adventure that I dreamed of as a child. Weekends spent in the mountains and on the water with my family, scouts and air cadets fuelled that passion, so when I had the chance to choose a career in this industry I enrolled on a College course, 20 years ago and well, ‘The rest is history’ as they say! Very quickly I realised that been on the water was where my enthusiasm lay. Since then kayaking and canoeing has defined my life, pursuing expeditions around the world.
The main reason I continue doing what I do is I get the opportunity to set foot in places that very few people have been and places that take effort to get there. Seeing people challenge themselves in new environments and try new things, and watch them show resilience and good humour, quite often in the face of adversity, because the sun doesn’t always shine!
My Qualifications allow to take people into these wild, beautiful, and remote places, and also train and assess the next generation of Instructors and guides
All this in the place I now call home, Scotland!
Ross - Managing Director
I have been fortunate to have been introduced to Scotland’s wilderness at an early age and it has always been where I have felt most at ease. I count myself very lucky to have turned this passion for the outdoors into a career and helping people discover the challenges and benefits that lie within nature's playground is a dream come true.
I am immensely proud of Beyond Adventure, our staff and the people we work with.
When not working I love to go on microadventures of my own, whether it is on bike, board or boat - usually with my family and friends.
Steve - Founder and Director
Steve has worked full-time in outdoor education for the past 25 years. He holds the British Canoeing Coaching Diploma (UKCC Level 4) as well as a British Canoe Union Level 5 Coach award as well as holding Scottish Mountain Leader Training Boards Summer and Winter Awards and various ski qualifications.
His particular passion is the outdoors and those activities which take place in an expedition or journey context, hence the emphasis placed on open canoeing and expeditioning in our Beyond Adventure programmes.
Steve also acts as Technical Advisor to many Outdoor Centres across the UK in both open canoeing and kayaking.
Julie - Office Ninja
Jules has been involved with Beyond Adventure almost from the beginning, her technological expertise has made her an invaluable and longstanding team member. Jules is the glue that holds together the Beyond Adventure team. She is really active and likes to hit the slopes when the snow is about and enjoys long distance biking journeys with good friends. Journeying and exploring are her passions and she keeps the team well fed with her delicious baking. Jules used to teach Maths and Computing so she is the perfect person to keep the Beyond Adventure office in good order.
Sam West - Instructor
I’m originally from NZ and I’ve now been instructing around the globe for the last 13 years, exploring the amazing world we live in.
I have been in Scotland now for the last 4 years. Playing on the rivers, hills and crags.
I have been adventuring from a young age, and now helping other people to adventure and experience new things.
I'm passionate about being able to inspire and encourage people to try new things, to show people that they too belong in the outdoors.
Fred Cochrane - Instructor
I love going on journeys, whether on foot, bike, skis , or canoe- I especially love the opportunity of doing that in Scotland and if I can share a journey with other folk all the better.
After retiring from the fire service when I was offered the chance to guide for Beyond Adventure, I never looked back.
Fred holds various qualifications that enable him to guide and coach our different activities and lead trips. He is also a ski patroller and holds a Wilderness EMT qualification.
He has a passion for the wildlife found in Scotland and can often be found with a camera in his hand.
