OPEN WATER CANOE LEADER
Successful performance at this level indicates that a candidate has the personal skill level and leadership ability required to lead a group of up to 4 solo canoe paddlers or 3 tandem canoe crews (not including themselves), on Moderate Inland Water. A successful candidate will be able to evaluate a group of paddlers to establish whether a particular trip is suitable to their level of performance or choose alternatives.
Moderate Water Definition
Inland: Large areas of open water that exceed the sheltered water definition, where the paddlers are no more than 500 metres off shore and in wind strengths that do not exceed Beaufort force 4.
No longer a direct pre requisite of the assessment, however we strongly recommend that candidates attend a 2 day training course with us to ensure that they are fully prepared for assessment.
On this day candidates will cover all the British Canoeing syllabus for the open water leader and will leave with a full action plan to support your journey towards assessment.
Pre requisits
National Association British Canoeing Canoe Leadership Registration (LR);
Valid (within 3 years) British Canoeing recognised 2 day first aid award;
Previous experience: provide evidence of 12 trips (minimum 4 hours duration) that includes at least 3 different open water journeys with winds up to Beaufort force 4 (minimum 4 hours duration), as a member of a group and the same as an assistant leader;
The above journeys should involve some overnight camps.
British Canoeing White Water Safety and Rescue Training Course (or Rescue 3 Whitewater Rescue Technician).
Candidates must be aged 16 or over at the time of assessment. Candidates under the age of 18 can take the award, but cannot be deemed responsible for leadership by law until they turn 18.

WHITE WATER CANOE LEADER

White Water: Grade 2(3) white water or equivalent weirs

ADVANCED CANOE OPEN WATER LEADER TRAINING
An Advanced Water Leader is someone who wants to take paddlers on trips and journeys in the advanced water environment. This involves a high level of personal skill, leadership ability and judgement to lead groups on advanced river journeys, advanced tidal water or advanced white water. These discipline specific awards enable Advanced Water Leaders to select appropriate environments for paddlers with a range of experiences. An Advanced Water Leader is a highly skilled paddler who is committed to developing themselves and others in the advanced water environment.
No longer a direct pre requisite of the assessment, however we strongly recommend that candidates attend a 2 - 4 day training course with us to ensure that they are fully prepared for assessment.
On these days, candidates will cover all the British Canoeing syllabus for the advanced open water leader and will leave with a full action plan to support your journey towards assessment.

To become an Advanced Canoe Leader, you will need to successfully complete a two day, mainly practical assessment, as well as two evening exercises, on sections of advanced white water and advanced open water. Advanced Canoe Leaders need to have the personal skill level, leadership ability and judgement to lead paddlers with a range of experience, up to and including advanced white water and advanced open water.
