Just before Christmas last month I took my 9 year old nephew for a walk up a local hill. He is an amazingly keen and energetic wee man who has an affinity with the outdoors, but coming from Sussex, hills are not something that he has explored much!
We could not have chosen the day better. Starting off in the mist hanging to the Strath we meandered our way up the frozen turf, our breath hanging in the air before us. Eventually the mist began to clear. The peaks of Highland Perthshire started to pop out of the shroud, illuminated by the winter sun and framed by the bluest of backdrops, the cloud inversion covering thew valley gave the impression we were standing on top of the world. As we neared the top the expression of my nephew was one of awe – a cheeky grin spread across his face from ear to ear! He climbed the summit cairn and spread his arms wide, not from instruction but from instinct, it must have seemed the thing to do and it was perfect!
This day was just the best. Showing somebody something new for the first time is what we at Beyond Adventure love to do, it motivates and inspires us to see people challenging themselves in the outdoors.
When was the last time you challenged yourself?Â
If you are struggling to remember I would hazard a guess that it has been too long!
