Top Spots Vol. 1

Loch Tay and Kenmore

Loch Tay and the charming village of Kenmore nestle in the heart of Scotland, offering visitors a serene escape into nature's embrace. Situated amidst the stunning landscapes of Perthshire, this region boasts an abundance of natural beauty and a plethora of outdoor activities to enthrall adventurers and nature lovers alike.

Loch Tay, a freshwater loch stretching approximately 15 miles long (the largest in the region and the 6th largest in Scotland), is the focal point of this picturesque area. Its crystal-clear waters reflect the surrounding rugged hillsides, creating a captivating panorama that changes with the shifting light.

When I've done my work of day,
And I row my boat away,
Doon the waters of Loch Tay,
As the evening light is fading
And I look upon Ben Lawers
Where the after glory glows;
And I think on two bright eyes
And the melting mouth below.

Loch Tay Boat Song

Kenmore, a quaint village nestled along the eastern shores of Loch Tay, serves as the perfect gateway to explore this idyllic region. Its quaint streets lined with traditional cottages exude old-world charm, while the nearby Kenmore Bridge offers panoramic views of the loch and its scenic surroundings.

Only 6 miles up the River Tay from Aberfeldy, Loch Tay is one of our go-to venues for adventuring with customers. As well as the natural, unspoilt beauty of the area, the history, flora and fauna are absolutely spellbinding.

Loch Tay has a fascinating history. There is evidence of people settling on its banks as long ago as the 7th millennia BC.

It has an abundance of crannogs dating from the Iron Age, replicas that can be seen at the new Scottish Crannog Centre.

In more modern times, Loch Tay has been the home to Lords, Ladies and even Queens! Queen Victoria famously honeymooned with Prince Albert at Taymouth Castle and enjoyed rowing on the Loch with her new husband.

For nature lovers, the banks of Loch Tay give plenty of opportunities to spot the local wildlife.

From Red Deer in the surrounding hills, Ospreys and Golden Eagles soaring overhead to Beavers, Pine Martin and Red Squirrels in the forested banks, Loch Tay is a hotbed for some of the Uk's most iconic animals .

Must do Adventures around Loch Tay

  1. Explore the waters by canoe! What better way to get to know this famous loch than to immerse yourself in the waters, stop off on the islands and watch the world go by!
  2. Hike Ben Lawers. The mass of Ben Lawers (10th highest mountain in the UK) and its neighbouring Munros frame Loch Tay. This hike provides stunning vistas of the glen, the views are a well-earned reward for reaching the summit!
